I was so sad to hear of Chester's passing... I will never forget the dinners, lunches and business meetings we shared over the past 8 years. I feel blessed to have known him. I will miss him... My thoughts and prayers are with Ann and his family.

Nice web site. As a young teen ager many long years ago I used to listen to KTRB here in San Jose on an old Zenith radio. Guess thats when it was a clear channel station. Used to hear Bill and Cliff chatting on HF when Cliff was mobiling over this way. As I recall they had a mutual friend up here on 101 and his name was Elmer Armond as I recall, his call was W6LXA. If anyone remembers some of this let me know or if I am wrong or mixed up or both please let me know.

Admin reply: Hi Chuck, thanks for your comments. Unfortunately Bill, W6CF and Cliff, W6ERE are long time silent keys. The only one that might know is Cal Purviance, K6BII. I will check with him and post his response here.

Hello Bob. This is a wonderful website and it brings back so many memories. I am sorry to hear of the passing of Chester Smith. I got to know Chester when I worked as a DJ at KTRB in the late 40's. He was 19 and I was 21. It was my first radio job out of college. Years later I was directing a live show at KJEO in Fresno and this sharp young fellow in a great looking business suit came in with our top management people. It was Chester Smith. We reminised a bit and he was away. It was good to see him. His life is an amazing story. He will be missed.

Regardless of the outcome of the planned "physical" Radio Museum, I sure hope this wonderful website will be continuing! It has become a virtual treasure trove of Modesto radio memorabilia. Always new information and/or someone new (and often surprising) checking in. Great to see old friends like Ron Dunlap, Bob Neutzling, Joel Shorr, Barry Fyffe and many others stopping by. Look forward to reading comments from others who'll be visiting the site as word continues to spread.

I have very much enjoyed Bob Pinheiro's recent tributes to Chester Smith. I had the pleasure of working for the legendary broadcaster at his KLOC Ranch back in the mid-70s. Thanks Bob!

Admin reply: Thank you for the nice comments Lee. It's contributions from people like you that make the project successful.

I had the opportunity to work for Chester from 1994-1998 at Sainte Partners/KCSO. He was a great human being and Christian. He will always be remembered. I would like to express my deepest condolences to the Smith Family. Ann, Lori, Rob, Lorna & Roxanne my thoughts and prayers are with you.

I am really going to miss Mr. Chester Smith. He got me into television while I was a student at Butte College, and was an intern at KCVU Fox 30 (at that time KBCP Channel 30)in Paradise (Chico-Redding). Chester was a very Christian man, and he helped me out big time.

For me, I am very active in my Catholic parish; working under Chester I saw a niced shaped wooden cross at KCVU in Chico and at the KCSO Channel 19 Sales Office in Sacramento. He made me believe in the Lord, which I think Chester was one of God's representatives on Earth.

I think the God took Chester, beacause God needed him to sing and take care of business in heaven. God Bless You Chester I will miss you.

Chester was a Good and Godly man. I will miss his friendship and our visits at Latiff's in Turlock. I spoke to Ann Lesley this afternoon and felt sorrow for her sadness and loss of her best friend. Chester often spoke of his devotion to Our Lord and the greatness of Heaven like no one has ever seen before. How I will miss gentle smile and his calming voice.
God bless you Chester and may the Grace of God be with you for ever and for always.
The Kim Briggs Family

We used to go to the dances at the Riverbank Club House when Chester Smith played. We had a good time. Saw lots of good friends and danced the night away. We saw a lot of young country music stars when they were young and just starting,Buck Owens, George Jones and many others.

So sorry to read about the passing of Chester Smith. I was lucky enough to work for Chester at KLOC in 1975!!! It was my FIRST sales job back in 1975. Had been on the air for years, and Chester gave me the opportunity to break into sales. Been selling ever since!!! What a businessman he was. He will be missed.
