Elizabeth "Betty" Purviance, 84, of Modesto passed away peacefully September 29, 2012. She was surrounded by her family, friends and the wonderful staff at the Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson. Betty was a proud member of Friends of Hospice for 22 years as well as a docent at the McHenry Museum. Her contributions and service will not be forgotten.
Betty was born in San Francisco, after high school she went on to become a nurse. She graduated from the Santa Clara County Hospital nursing program with classes at San Jose State in 1948. Her first nursing job was at Peralta Hospital in Oakland, CA. She then moved to the University of California Hospital, San Francisco, CA (1950-1953). Betty married, moved to Modesto and had three children. She started working at Doctors Hospital of Modesto in its infancy in 1962. There she scrubbed and circulated in the Operating Room working all types of surgical procedures. She remarried in 1970 and continued working at D.M.C. In 1987, Betty found a new position in the Operating Room, scheduling, she retired in 1990. Betty continued to work per diem at D.M.C. for the next 8 years in the O.R. scheduling department.
She and her husband, Warren "Cal" Purviance, spent much of their time "wandering" the entire country. Cal Purviance passed away in January 2011. They are survived by their children; Gregg Purviance, Brad Zias, Laurie Henson, Craig Zais and Vann Nichelini along with seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
