KHKK (The Hawk) Tower Topples In 2006 Storm

In December 2006 the KHKK  (104.1 MHz The Hawk) 380 ft. radio tower on Black Butte near Tracy, CA collapsed during a winter storm. The tower was erected in 1977 when the station was known as KHOP FM.  Fortunately the tower fell in a northeasterly direction missing the building and the power lines.

The station, owned by Citadel Broadcasting, was quickly back on the air operating from its sister station (KATM FM)  facility just south of Black Butte just inside Stanislaus County near Vernalis. KATM's backup transmitter was retuned from 103.3 MHz to 104.1 MHz and telemetry antennas reoriented to the KHKK studios in Modesto. KHKK transmitted from this location until a new tower could be installed on Black Butte.
