During the Vietnam war  Bill Bates asked listeners to donate afghans to be given to injured servicemen recuperating at the Oak Knoll naval hospital in Oakland.   Approximately 1 1/2 tons of Afghans (512) were delivered in February 1968  to the hospital by Cal Purviance, Don Schneider and Phil Barber.   One of the many public service efforts of Bill Bates and KTRB.
